HYPOTHESIS: The "fifth trumpet" of Revelation 9:1-11 is a symbolic description of the coronavirus pandemic and the worldwide vaccination campaign that followed.
If you lived in the first century AD (nearly 2,000 years ago), and you were somehow shown a vision of microscopic particles, a mass vaccination campaign, hospitals and ambulances, would you recognize what you were seeing? I doubt it, since you would have no concept of those things.
If the vision was really meant for people a few thousand years later, it would probably need to be given in symbolic form, so it could be written down and transmitted easily.
This is what I am proposing. John, the author of Revelation, didn't see the future like a movie in his mind. Instead, he was given a vision containing a series of symbolic images that could be passed on to future generations, and that would hide their meaning for a time beyond his day.
I believe we are living in the period when the "fifth trumpet" has blown, and its symbols are now increasingly matching up with the reality we have been living in. Collectively, the trumpets are a series of wake-up calls for humanity.
In the book of Revelation, Satan, the enemy of both God and humans, is described as dragging a third of the stars of heaven down to earth. Whoever the "star" is here, he is given "the key of the shaft of the abyss."
Viruses also work like a key. They have a false key which enables them to break into cells.
This is also the story of the coronavirus. It has "Spike" proteins that act as keys, and they unlock ACE2 binding sites on a cell.

In regular speech, words are expected to have one meaning, but prophecy is closer to poetry, in which words and sentences can carry several related ideas and meanings at once.
In this verse, the "star" opens the "shaft of the abyss," and thick smoke ascends to darken the sun and air.
This is an example of multiple meanings that can be derived from the symbology. Air is necessary to breathe. It is the human life-support system. During the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, there were reports of people on life support, needing air, as well as shortages of ventilators which deliver air to the lungs.
Virus particles are also said to be transmitted by air, thus acting like smoke particles. This is why authorities recommended or required face coverings.
The "sun" is also darkened, which might leave only its outline or "corona." However, in a symbolic sense, the "sun" may represent human authorities. Their "light" is darkened during this time. Many governments imposed strict control over the lives of the people during the pandemic, with lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing requirements and so on.
Coronavirus is said to target the lining of the throat and lungs, and that transmission could happen when we cough or sneeze. In this way, the "shaft of the abyss" might also be a metaphor for the throat and lungs.
This is another example of how the prophecy has a flexible meaning based on the context. In terms of coronavirus, it uses the "Spike" protein to hijack cells, which as an idea would be similar to the stinger on a scorpion.
At the same time, the coronavirus pandemic caused a rush to create a vaccine. Within months, several were approved for emergency use, and a worldwide vaccination campaign began.
Vaccines tend to be injected by a needle, much like scorpions sting people with their stingers. Thus, certain companies within the pharmaceutical industry, along with medical professionals, were granted legal authority to do what the scorpions of the earth do naturally.
Locust swarms are famous for damaging crops and consuming the green vegetation wherever they settle. However, these symbolic locusts are told not to harm any of those things, but "only those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads."
This is interesting. For one, it contrasts nature (grass, green plants, trees) with people. These locusts are specifically targeting people.
The locusts aren't from God, since he didn't open the shaft. However, they are allowed to target those who don't yet have "the seal of God." This is consistent with the idea that the seven trumpets are seven wake-up calls.
One curious feature of coronavirus is that its main victims seem to be older people, and those who already have underlying illnesses. While young people can be affected by covid (the collection of symptoms caused by the coronavirus), death is incredibly rare in the young. We might therefore say that "green plants" are also an allusion to younger people. They are newer to our planet, and therefore innocent of the crimes of this world. Similarly, even vaccination campaigns were primarily targeted at older people to begin with.
Desert locusts can live between 3 and 6 months. They come in a swarm, inflict their devastation on the crops, and then leave. In one sense, the idea of locusts fits quite well with the coronavirus pandemic, coming and going in waves and variants. However, the emphasis in this verse is on people not dying, while millions of people have died in the pandemic.
The language of this verse is more consistent with the mass vaccination campaign, the purpose of which is not to kill.
At the same time, millions of people have reported adverse effects after receiving a coronavirus vaccine, some of them serious or even deadly. Many of these adverse effects are warned about in the legal documents related to the vaccines, but those supplying and administering the jabs are still granted authority to inject people.
In other words, this verse may be alluding to the legally permitted effects of the vaccine on some. From John's perspective, it may look like a mass tormenting campaign!
Note that the above figures for Ivermectin to Tylenol are for 15 YEARS (1996-2001) while the figures for Covid vaccines are for just six months.
The covid vaccines also seem to have a window of effectiveness that fades over time. This window might not be exactly five months, but it does seem to be measured in months, with additional "booster" shots needed. The "five months" could therefore represent the time in which each jab is reportedly in effect, before another one is needed.

I think this describes the mental torment people faced during this time, not just by the people who suffered adverse effects from a vaccine, but also by people who suffered mental distress as a result of the lockdowns, isolation and social distancing. For some, this was worse than the effects of the virus.
(Fortunately, God is able to counter some of this mental anguish by providing exciting new revelations and insights that have been hidden away for literally thousands of years. Early on in the coronavirus pandemic, people pointed to this verse, noting that the word "corona" means "crown." However, I think the imagery of this verse better fits the health and medical sectors during the pandemic, the ones administering the jabs.
The language is that of a battle. But in what battle are the participants not allowed to kill? This would only be the case in a metaphorical war, like the "war on drugs." I think this verse is talking about what we might call the "war on coronavirus."
This is why the locusts are "like horses prepared for battle." To the participants, they are on a war footing, at least metaphorically.
This is why they wear what look like crowns of gold. In ancient times, these were given out to sporting victors. This verse portrays the ones administering the jabs as victors, and they are considered heroes because their purpose is not to kill but to save lives.
They have faces like people and hair like women because they represent the men and women on the front lines of this coronavirus "battle."
They include surgeons who sometimes have to literally cut people open with sharp instruments. In a metaphorical sense, they have teeth like lions.
By the way, I don't think the symbology is meant to denigrate this group of people. If my interpretation is correct, John is seeing a symbolic vision, because he wouldn't have understood the literal events. There were no vaccine jabs, hospitals or ambulances in John's day - not even St John's ambulances!
John wouldn't have recognized a nurse with a needle, an ambulance, or a coronavirus particle, so this is why he was given a symbolic vision representing these things.
This is why the Greek says they had "like" breastplates. John is saying they weren't actually breastplates, but like them. Breastplates protect the body from harm. They could therefore represent any shielding or isolation equipment used by the medical industry, to separate themselves from their patients.
At the same time, the locusts have the "sound of chariots" and "many horses rushing into battle," so they could also represent the vehicles they use, such as ambulances. As well as being used for rushing people to hospital, these vehicles isolate the patient from the outside world, so they would align with the "breastplates of iron" idea.
If my hypothesis is correct, this reinforces the idea that the locusts refer to the ones supplying and administering the "stingers" or jabs. From John's perspective, it looks as if they are stinging people, and harming them for a limited window of time.
In the Hebrew, "Abaddon" was the place of destruction, and is also associated with death and the grave (called "Sheol" in Hebrew). It appears in the Hebrew scriptures several times. For example...
"Sheol [the grave] is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering." - Job 26:6
"Abaddon and Death say, 'We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'" - Job 28:22
"Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD; how much more the hearts of the children of man!" - Proverbs 15:11, ESV
In this verse, "destruction" has been personified as "the angel of the abyss." This could represent the destruction in human lives brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, and also in the severe adverse effects and deaths caused by the vaccines.
Fortunately, there is an end to this "fifth trumpet." However, it is described as a "woe" because of the terrible toll it has taken in human lives, and also in the physical and mental anguish it has caused.
It's worth noting that, after the sixth trumpet, which involves a devastating war around the Euphrates river in the Middle East, there is an outpouring of knowledge and understanding; but the account also mentions a "wild beast that ascends out of the abyss." (Revelation 11:7)
This is the first time such a "wild beast" is mentioned, and is only the second time the "abyss" has been mentioned, which is where the smoke and locusts came from in the fifth trumpet.
Are we seeing a different style of human rule forming as a result of the coronavirus pandemic? Already we are seeing many governments trying to force their populations to be vaccinated, and linking many ordinary activities to their vaccination status. Revelation might have a thing or two to say about that as well. Watch this space.
