Order Denying Clemency

Statement by Brian Kammer, attorney for Marcus Johnson, on denial of clemency:

"The duty of the Board of Pardons and Paroles is to act as a failsafe to prevent miscarriages of justice such as the execution of persons whom the evidence shows may be innocent. The Board failed egregiously in this respect, and as a result the state of Georgia is about to execute an innocent man."

Reply to Brief in Opposition

Order denying review and stay.

Statement of Brian Kammer, attorney for Marcus Johnson, regarding denial of review by the Supreme Court:

"The execution of Marcus Johnson deepens the moral stain on the State of Georgia. Georgia has a shameful, disturbing record of executing the mentally ill and disabled, in addition to those for whom there are serious questions as to their guilt, at a time when the nation is questioning a system so riddled with arbitrary and innacurate, not to mention morally bankrupt, judgments. Georgia should be erring on the side of caution, not rushing its citizens pell mell to the execution chamber."
